One Goat, One Dream: How It All Started

Coffee and goats have a long and quirky history together.

Perhaps you have already heard some variation of this before, but there's actually a pretty interesting story about our beloved coffee. It has been said that coffee was first discovered by a goat herder in Ethiopia who noticed that his goats became weirdly energetic after eating certain berries. After trying the berries himself, the herder discovered their stimulating effects and eventually began cultivating what we now know as "coffee".

In some areas, farmers would let their goats graze on coffee plants, and the goats would eat the ripe coffee berries. And when the goats would poop out those beans, the farmers would collect them and process them into coffee. Yes, that's right - some of the world's most delicious coffee owes its entire existence to goat poop! Who knew.

The Coffee Goat originally started as a passion project by a former barista who spent many blissful years making coffee in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and a great bit of time exploring coffee culture in places like Portland, Oregon and Latin America as well. As a result, The Coffee Goat is way more than just providing you with great beans and other coffee related stuff. It's about all of the weird and wonderful (caffeinated) experiences that we share along with the way.

People connect through coffee - whether it be with family, with friends, or even the barista at the coffee shop you frequent (and might even end up sharing a bit of a bond with!). And we enjoy being a part of that. Coffee is a wonderful gift and, all in all, we are very grateful to be able to share that with you. And also for those goats and their poop, and the people who discovered just what those magical little energy beans could do.

Speaking of which, that's why we've been working closely with two amazing roasters who share our commitment to coffee, to quality, and to sustainability. The beans used in our designer blends and single origin coffees are all ethically sourced, ensuring that our coffee not only tastes amazing but also supports the livelihoods of coffee farmers and their families.

As a small company, we pride ourselves on offering down-to-earth service just like you'd get at your favourite local coffee shop, as well as a unique selection of coffee blends and brewing supplies. Whether you're a seasoned coffee veteran or just starting out on your journey, we're here to help you find the perfect brew and the right tools and equipment, so that you, too, can have an excellent experience on your respective coffee journey.
